Joo Heng Eating House (Zhe Char)
20 mins. That was all the time that we took to clean the tables at Joo Heng. Sure we were hungry, ravenous even, but the food was also incredibly delicious, so much so we could not stop eating till we were done with the very last morsel. The steamed fish dressed in a light soy bean sauce (top) was superbly fresh. The sweet potato leaves, a rarity in menus these days, was stir-fried in the most fragrant of chilli sambal (chilli sauce) that was spicy without being overpowering, and a generous dose of dried shrimp that enhanced the flavours wonderfully. Not being a fan of the bitter gourd, Joo Heng's bitter gourd with ribs made me a convert. The ever so light yet texture-filled prawn roll - we could practically taste the chopped chestnuts in the minced prawn mix. And the homemade taste of the steamed minced pork with salted fish... what more can I say. We complemented this feast with a claypot tofu and a lotus root soup. It was a 110 per cent satisfying meal. Total bill for us, the five hungry diners, a very modest S$74 (US$43). It is closed Mondays.
