Lee Kui (Ah Hoi) Restaurant

8 Mosque Street T. 6222 3654

This placed was packed to the brim when I arrived. A traditional Teochew (a Chinese ethnic group) style restaurant, that serves a pretty good meal. We had the usual, the steamed pomfret (variety of fish) was superbly fresh, and its accompanying broth, light and delicious; the white chives with prawns were very crunchy and sweet; the prawn roll was ordinary; as was the thick fish maw soup; the goose was a tad tough; and the cold crab a tad dry.

What knocked my socks off was the ornee or steamed yam dessert (below) that was marvellously smooth and textured at the same time, topped with pumpkin mash and not too sweet. Some hits, some misses, but on the whole, not a bad place for a Teochew dinner.
