Lei Garden
321 Orchard Road, #03-00 Orchard Shopping Centre T. 6734 3988
Lei Garden is one of the older Cantonese fine dining restaurant groups in Singapore, and it has carved a comfortable niche for itself right at the high end of the restaurant scene. Its reputation for quality is well-deserved. The price of quality however, has been increasing disproportionately over the years. But notwithstanding, when feeling risk averse, generous and craving good food, you wouldn't go wrong here.
This time we went in for dim sum. Apart from the usual suspects (shrimp dumplings, steamed pork buns, minced pork dumplings), our favourites were the deepfried crab meat roll with white sauce-looked painstaking to prepare, but well worth the effort-, the baked black pepper venison puff - more puff than venison, but the pepper gave it a nice kick. More than the dim sum though, it was the meat dishes-roast chicken, roast pork, barbequed pork-that had us ooh-ing, aah-ing and twitching for the last piece.
To add some bulk, we had the handmade noodles in crabmeat broth. Excellent both because the noodles were precisely blanched, and therefore not too starchy, and because the milky broth was fragrant, with a hint of gingery heat.
And while I did enjoy all of this, they were really just a means to an end for me. That being dessert of course. Pomelo and sago in mango cream, mango pudding and sesame-filled peanut balls. Ah. The peanut balls just melted in your mouth. Ummmmm!

Total bill for 4: S$185 (US$114). Like I said, go with a generous benefactor.

Finally some new entries. I loved Lei garden's food too. Their pan fried beef is to die for... Their old chicken sharks fins soup is fantastic
I prefer the Lei Garden at Orchard Plaza though the branch at Chijmes is also a firm favourite with some of my dining buds.
